The licence

What does the licence allow, and what needs a separate licence?

AIEUS and its first-party Core and Root module code are licensed by Artifex Systems LLC under the Business Source License 1.1 (BUSL-1.1).

The AIEUS source repository is private today.

The licence permits production use for any purpose except to provide a Commercial Platform Service. Permitted production uses include running AIEUS for your own business; developing, distributing and hosting applications that perform defined functions for their users, including paid applications; and providing paid installation, customisation, training, maintenance or support for a customer's permitted use. Keep in mind: A Commercial Platform Service is a commercial offering in which you operate AIEUS, including a modified or derivative version, and provide third parties with its general-purpose platform capabilities for creating and operating their own applications, agents or automated workflows; a free tier of a commercial offering is part of that offering. Installation or administration on a customer's behalf remains permitted when the customer controls its installation and the provider supplies professional services rather than access to the provider's platform offering. A Commercial Platform Service does not become permitted solely because its components run in a customer-controlled cloud account.

A Commercial Platform Service needs a separate commercial licence.

Providing application-specific configuration, reports, workflows or agent settings does not by itself constitute a Commercial Platform Service.

Applications and modules you write independently, not by copying or modifying AIEUS code, and your data, knowledge, configuration, branding and private business material, are not part of the licensed work. Running in AIEUS, using its APIs or sitting in a module does not by itself bring them under the licence. Keep in mind: AIEUS code that your module inherits or incorporates keeps its own licence terms, anything made by modifying AIEUS code is covered by the licence, and running AIEUS itself to host your material must still follow the licence.

The licence does not cover separately licensed third-party components; they keep their own licences, and AIEUS does not relicense them or supply missing permissions for their use.

Planned: Each version converts to the Apache License 2.0 on the fourth anniversary of its first publicly available distribution, and a later version does not restart an earlier version's period.
